ANNEX NEAR MØNS KLINT

The annex is situated on a summer house plot near Møns Klint. As a nod to the cliffs, the annex is constructed from load-bearing aerated concrete blocks, primarily composed of chalk. The annex and the use of aerated concrete should be seen as an exploration of the material's potential; it is easy to work with and economically accessible, yet porous and filled with small air pockets, meaning it cannot be left exposed without careful surface treatment. The aerated concrete is therefore sealed with a special coating that allows the walls to breathe while keeping water out. The advantage of this solution is that the treatment remains invisible, allowing the aerated concrete to appear as raw and honest in its expression as possible.

The annex features an honest and simple facade where practical elements are reduced to a minimum. For this reason, there is a slight pitch on all roof surfaces, directing water down through a roof drain, rendering gutters unnecessary. The drip nose between the concrete beam and the aerated concrete is painted yellow as a way to elevate an otherwise mundane building component into an ornament.

The annex is structured around an uncomplicated geometry with space for two bedrooms, both containing an entrance with closets, a bed, and a desk. The focus has been on creating intimate spaces that open up in different directions through two skylights in each section. Here, one can retreat, lie in bed, and observe the starry sky and the drifting clouds.

Inside, the aerated concrete is plastered, and a concrete floor with a finely polished surface has been laid, creating a contrast to the facade's raw concrete beam and plinth.
